Our Yoga School in Rishikesh, India

A sanctuary of yoga nestled in the serene landscapes of Rishikesh, the world-renowned birthplace of yoga. Accredited by Yoga Alliance, our school has been dedicated to upholding & sharing authentic yoga traditions for 15+ years.

Hariom Yoga Vidya School is a residential yoga school in Tapovan, Rishikesh. More than 3,000 students have trained here. The school is registered with Yoga Alliance as an RYS 200, an RYS 300 and an RYS 500, so the certificate you leave with is recognized wherever Yoga Alliance is.

Everything we run is residential. You live at the school, you eat three sattvic vegetarian meals a day in the same dining hall as your teachers, and the day is built for you so that the only thing you have to organize is your own practice. Batches are kept small on purpose: a teacher who has to raise their voice is a teacher who cannot correct you.

Founder

Pramod (ERYT500) was born in a spiritual family in 1973 in Odisha. From early childhood, he began his life full of devotion. As a result, he spent most of his time practicing meditation, attending temples, and learning Yoga Traditions. As part of his dedication to yoga, he spent 7 years living in an Ashram, learning Yoga and Meditation according to the Ancient Himalayan Tradition. With such experience, he has taught Yoga in different schools and places around the world such as Mumbai, Rishikesh, New Delhi, Italy, Austria, and Germany. He believes in a world where each individual is at peace and living cheerfully. He has been teaching for over twenty-one years. That is why he created Hariom Yoga Vidya School.

Greetings! Barinder Pal Singh, a dedicated yoga practitioner and teacher, holds a Master's degree in Yoga (2019) from Uttarakhand Sanskrit University. Rooted in the Sikh tradition, his spiritual journey has been guided by revered gurus, Shri Somdutt Amoli Guruji and Shri Mahesh Kothari Guruji. With over 15 years of teaching experience, he has cultivated profound mastery in Hatha Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga. His approach integrates traditional wisdom with disciplined practice, aiming to inspire holistic well-being, balance, and self-awareness in his students.

Greetings! Lakhi Ram was born in a very small Himalayan village in the middle ranges of Himalayas, so got a unique Yogic atmosphere in his village. Many Yogis (sages) used to practice Yoga there. He learned some fundamentals of yoga from those sages. So he has been practicing Yoga (mainly Shatkarma, Asana Pranayama, and Meditation) since his childhood. He made his study and practices deeper on Pranayama and meditation through different scriptures and commentaries, and he also learned about these from some modern Yoga teachers. So whatever knowledge he has got through these sources he always feels glad to share this knowledge with others. He has been teaching for over nine years.

The Syllabus

What We Teach: Hatha, Ashtanga Vinyasa, Kundalini and Yin

Every course here is built on classical Hatha yoga and opens outward from it. You are taught a posture rather than shown one: its name in English and in Sanskrit, what it is for, who should leave it alone, how to enter it step by step, and the counter-pose that follows.

Traditional Hatha Yoga

The spine of every course we teach, and the first class of every morning. Joints and glands first, then the standing, sitting, bending and twisting sequences, then the fire series, the inversions and Shavasana. This is the strand that makes a teacher rather than a practitioner: you learn why a posture is sequenced where it is.

Ashtanga Vinyasa

The dynamic half of the timetable, taught late in the afternoon when the body is already warm, and built up one series at a time rather than handed over whole. Ashtanga fixes the order of the postures, which is what turns ujjayi breath, bandha and drishti from vocabulary into something you do.

Kundalini Yoga

An hour of its own every mid-morning, and the strand most students do not expect to find on the timetable. Kundalini works through mantra, repetition and kriya rather than through shape, and it is taught here with its history, its methods and its contraindications rather than as an experience.

Yin, Pranayama and Meditation

The quiet half of the day. Yin holds a small number of shapes for minutes at a time and works on the connective tissue under the muscle. Pranayama and meditation are taught as subjects in their own right — seven breathing techniques, each with its meaning, its benefits and the people who should not practice it.

Philosophy, Anatomy and Teaching Methodology

A teacher training is not only asana, and the syllabus says so. Yoga philosophy and the Sutras, functional anatomy, alignment and hands-on adjustment, mantra chanting, satkarma and the teaching practice you are assessed on all carry their own hours on the timetable.

Meditation, Pranayama, Mudra, Bandha and Satkarma

A teacher training is not only asana, and the syllabus says so. Meditation, pranayama, mudra and bandha, traditional satkarma practices, and the practical techniques you are assessed on all carry their own hours on the timetable. Each practice supports a deeper understanding of yoga, helping you develop awareness, breath control, energy management, purification, concentration, and a strong foundation for teaching.

The Location

Where We Are — Tapovan, Rishikesh, in the Himalayas

Rishikesh sits where the Ganga leaves the Himalayas and comes down onto the plains, in the state of Uttarakhand in northern India. Yoga has been taught in this town for as long as anyone has been writing it down, and that is the reason people fly here rather than walk to a studio nearer home.

Tapovan, above Laxman Jhula

The school is in Tapovan, on the hillside above the Laxman Jhula bridge and on the quieter bank of the river. Close enough to walk down to the Ganga before morning practice, far enough up that the town's traffic stays in the town. The full address is Tapovan, Rishikesh, Uttarakhand 249192, India.

The Ganga, five minutes downhill

The river is the reason the town is here. Students walk down for the evening aarti at the ghats, sit by the water between classes, and cross Laxman Jhula — the footbridge Rishikesh is photographed from — to reach the cafés and bookshops on the far bank.

The Himalayan foothills, in every direction

The valley climbs behind the school and the forest starts where the lanes stop. The excursions on our courses go up into it rather than out of town, and the mountain air is a large part of why a month here does not feel like a month anywhere else.

Getting here from anywhere

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant (DED) at Dehradun, a short domestic hop from Delhi, and the school will arrange your pick-up if you tell us when you land. The nearest stations are Yog Nagari Rishikesh and Haridwar, 10–12 km away. From Delhi by road it is 5–6 hours up through the foothills.

For International Students

Coming to Rishikesh From Abroad

Students have come to this school from more than 37 countries. Every class is taught in English, every price on this site is in US dollars, and the practical side of arriving in India is something the office has done several hundred times.

The visa is a tourist visa

A tourist visa is the right one for everything this school runs, and the e-Visa route covers a stay of up to 60 days. You do not need a student visa — that application is for enrolment at a degree-granting institution and it will be refused. We are not immigration advisors, so check the current rules for your own passport.

English, and no prerequisite

Every class, every manual and every conversation with the office is in English. The 100 and 200 hour trainings and both retreats are open to complete beginners; nothing on this site asks you to arrive with a practice already.

One price, in US dollars

The figure on a course page is what you pay: tuition, your room and three meals a day for the whole stay. There is no separate accommodation bill and no per-class fee. Flights, your visa and whatever you buy in town are yours.

We will meet you at the airport

Tell us your arrival time and the school arranges the pick-up from Dehradun. Tapovan's lanes are poorly signed and a driver who has not been here before will get lost — that is the honest reason the offer exists, rather than a courtesy.

Questions About Training in Rishikesh

Can A Beginner Become A Yoga Teacher?+

Yes, absolutely. You do not need to be a 500 hour yoga TTC trained expert to become a best yoga teacher in Rishikesh. Moreover, you do not need to do headstands and Hanuman Asana, to be considered competent. You will be amazed to know that many people go for yoga teacher training at first, to deepen their knowledge. Among the beginner level learners, many get ample time to practice and perfect their yoga poses. The 200 hour yoga TTC is the perfect stepping stone for you to embrace the idea of teaching. You can always take up a job as assistant yoga teacher, after completing the training.

Is It Worth Registering With Yoga Alliance?+

This is one of the most common questions that students ask. However, it is not a mandate to be exact. It is a voluntary decision for any yoga school, to register or not. Yoga Alliance is basically a private and non-profit organization, created sometime in 1999-2000. It mainly acts as a standard for yoga education. The organization has a set criterion that schools registered under it, need to follow. After completing a Yoga Alliance course, you can apply for the Registered Yoga Teacher training certification. Moreover, it offers a global platform to the students that helps in attending courses and workshops, almost free of cost.

Is Hatha Yoga Hard?+

Hatha Yoga is very easy, to be exact. Any beginner level student can learn Hatha Yoga. It is a static yoga style. So, if you are looking for more flexibility, balance, and stability, then you have to go for Hatha Yoga. Most classes last from 45 minutes to 90 minutes. So, the classes can be a bit mentally and physically exhausting. You will be amazed to know that Hatha Yoga is the most commonly practiced yoga style across the western world. Being a slower form of yoga, you get more time to focus on your breathing patterns and focus. So, it mainly prepares you for higher forms.
