Food

What Is Food?

Food is one of the most important and foundational need of life. It provides the body with important nutrients, such as proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, fats, and minerals. You need food for the development, growth, and repair of body tissues. This is a much generalized definition of food. In the context of yoga, if you eat the wrong kind of food, then you contract the qualities of that food. Food influences who are, how you behave, and also your emotions. In the yogic realm, food makes the person. So, if you just practice yoga asanas, without following food guidelines, it is not of much use. At the yoga school in Rishikesh, food is considered as one of the most important factors, which govern your yogic lifestyle

Apart from eating the right kind of food, you need to ingest the right quantity. If you eat more, you will become lethargic. On the other hand, if you eat less, then your body will not get nourishment. So, you will not be able to go about your tasks. Moreover, you need to eat food at the right time, everyday. If you maintain a routine, then the body will fall into a rhythm. There is another factor that affects the diet. It is your mental disposition, while you are cooking or eating the food. That is why, you can practice listening to soothing music or mantras, while eating.

The Three Types Of Food In Bhagavad Gita

According to the Bhagavad Gita, every human being is born with innate faith and disposition. Human beings are governed by Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. The quality of the faith governing every human being, is decided by the mind. In this context, similar personalities get attracted toward similar ones. People get drawn to foods that reflect the above qualities of Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. Moreover, if you decide to make changes in your life, and want to achieve yogic goals, you must adhere to certain food guidelines.

According to the Bhagavad Gita or Ayurveda, there are three categories of food. They are:

  • Sattvic– These foods promote good health, proper mental disposition towards a yogic life, virtue, and wisdom. You can develop a calm mind and thought process, if you stick to such foods. Sattvic foods are also said to improve longevity and will power. Sattvic foods, as per the yoga school in India are whole grains, pulses, cereals, fruits, vegetables, herbal teas, seeds, and nuts.
  • Rajasic– Those who are governed by Rajas Guna, are fiery in nature, angry, ambitious, and target-oriented. Such people mainly prefer hot, pungent, and spicy food. Meats, fish, pungent vegetables, fried food, and fermented food comes under this category.
  • Tamasic– Those who are governed by Tamas, are dull, lethargic, suffer from laziness, and are disoriented. Such people often get attracted to foods that have the same quality. Preserved food, fermented food, canned food, liquors, and fries come under this category.

You must choose foods, whose qualities you want to imbibe. You can learn about the same in the yoga teacher training in Rishikesh.

Importance Of Food In Our Daily Life

Most people today, are concerned about the taste of the food, rather than the value. You must cut down on convenience food, if you want to lead a healthy life. Healthy food is not just about eating boiled or blanched food, or eating less, or avoiding fat, altogether. Healthy eating is about eating everything in proper balance. You must eat everything in moderation. It is believed that vegetarian food is better than non-vegetarian options, as they are easy to digest. Thus, allowing you to create less pressure on the digestive system. If you ingest healthy food on a daily basis, you will feel lighter and more active.

According to the principle of yoga, which aims towards non-harming, vegetarian foods take precedence over other food groups. You can get your daily dose of proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates, fats, and minerals from vegetarian foods. Food helps in growth, development, and repair of damaged tissues. However, that is not all. It also affects how you think. That is why, Sattvic food assumes a lot of importance, if you are aiming towards a yogic way of life. Plant-based foods are essentially better for yogis. That is why, most ashrams and yoga schools in India grow their own vegetables and fruits in the backyard garden. Healing herbs like Cilantro, and Parsley also has a huge role to play here.

  • Food and Mind

You will be able to connect with your food, at one of the most peaceful locations in Rishikesh. Hari Om Yoga Vidya School is one of the most prominent yoga schools, following food principles, apart from yoga life. Eating with mindfulness and a positive attitude results in proper absorption and utilization of the nutrients.

Always eat with gratitude. You must also abstain from eating food at certain times, so as to give the organs some time to relax. Unhealthy eating patterns often result in ailments, due to many reasons. If you eat sugary foods, it raises the blood sugar levels in the blood and causes mood swings. Additionally, if you eat too much fatty substances, then the body is unable to absorb the excess and it results in uneasiness. It eventually affects your quality of life. If you follow a healthy meal plan, you feel active and energized all day. That is the reason why, the best yoga school in Rishikesh stresses healthy food consumption. Good nutrition is also connected to your emotional well-being.

  • Food in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, you are supposed to choose food that suits your Prakriti or Dosha. Each person has a unique mind-body constitution, and any imbalance in the same may cause issues with your health. The three main doshas, according to which you should have your food are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

According to the principles of Ayurveda, there are three stages that the digestive system goes through after each meal. If you gorge on snacks in between, the body’s natural cycle gets disrupted. Therefore, you should only have three main meals in a day. However, you can have juices and herbal teas in between the main meals. Moreover, you should always consume fresh seasonal food. And that includes fruits and vegetables. These increase the Prana inside the body. Furthermore, you should eat the largest meal of the day, at lunchtime. It is the time, when the digestive ‘Agni’ is at its strongest. Also, do remember to eat at least three hours before bedtime. It facilitates the repair of the body, when you sleep. If you follow these Ayurvedaprinciples, you will remain healthy and strong throughout.

  • Food and Holistic Life

The main goal of food is to promote a healthy and holistic lifestyle. The food that you eat will impact the body, mind, as well as the soul. So, you have to eat fresh and seasonal food. When you eat whole fruits and vegetables, you get fresh Prana. On the other hand, stale food does not have any Prana, at all. When you eat according to your doshas, you get the necessary nutrients. Moreover, you can bring about positive changes as well. A holistic life is not just centred on asanas, meditation, and kriyas, but a lot more.

You can maintain a holistic diet and life, by eating raw, whole foods, reducing salt intake, drinking a lot of water, and by watching the portions. Additionally, be mindful of what you eat. The food will also affect the thinking style, which will ultimately affect your relationships. So, practicing the above will lead to a wholesome and easy life. Change your mind and thought process, to impact your life.

At Hari Om Yoga Vidya School, you will get to learn and practice the above, and also get to enjoy a blissful life

I have just completed the amazing 200hr YTT at Hari Om Yoga school. What a wonderfully intense experience! The course is very comprehensive and challenging you literally eat, sleep, meditate yoga for 6 days of the week. It covers everything from philosophy to pranayama, meditation, to ashtanga vinyasa and Hatha yoga. The teachers are good and Pramood and his wife ( the director of the school) are very kind and welcoming. The media crew Prince and Nitesh are friendly and do a wonderful job. Food was good, if a little monotonous and too many carbs for me, would be good to have a bit more protein. Rooms are clean, big and very adequate. The only real improvement I can suggest would be to start the teaching and sequence building a little earlier so that the students become accustomed to it sooner rather than the stress all piled into the last week. Other than that I highly recommend Hari Om yoga school, when you are embarking on this experience it opens you up and you need to be surrounded by good and caring people, and all the people that manage Hari Om are certainly that. All in all an amazing experience, dream fulfilled and would do it all again in a heartbeat. Thank you Pramood and all at Hari Om Vidya 🙏🏻 namaste and Hari Omji ❤️

Hariom Vidya yoga school was really great! I am very happy with my choice to come to this school. There was a great diversity in classes and teachers. Everyone was very involved and passionate and willing to answer questions. It really felt like I was part of a family and community. I made amazing friends and was part of a very supportive group. Pramood and his wife curated a lovely environment and everyone in the staff are very kind and willing to help. The rooms were amazing, lots of room and private balcony. Nice and clean. The garden is absolutely beautiful with lots of flowers, and gets a lot of afternoon sun. It is not uncommon to see lots of monkeys, birds, and bees. The schedule is full and busy, but there is a lot to learn in a short month and I think it was wonderfully organized. We had fun excursions and had the freedom to do what we wanted on days off. Not so much time to go out on class days, but there’s no real need as the food we are served is made with love and is delicious. There are little cafes near the school if anyone wants some sweets or tea, or simply to change the atmosphere a bit. I know that this is not exactly a budget school, there are other less expensive ones. But I think this one was worth every penny because of the holistic experience. You get more for your money. All in all, I am very satisfied with the training and I had a really wonderful month despite the intensity. It is important to listen to your body and the teachers will push your boundaries but if you set your limit, they will not surpass them. So make sure to always listen to yourself.
I would 100% recommend this school. They will always be there for you and make sure you feel at home.

My experiences about my Yoga Retreat in Rishikesh:
I did my one Week Yoga Retreat at Hariom Yoga Vidya School in Rishikesh in August 2022. I'm so happy to have choosen this Yoga School, because it was like a Family to me. I joined all the classes for the Yoga Teacher Training which was in addition to the Yoga practice really informative for me. I was also taking part at the fire ceremony in the beginning what was such a great experience for me. All the people working in this school are so friendly and caring, I really miss them already!
At the beginning I was a bit scared to travel to India alone. In retrospect, however, I have to say that I had absolutely no reason to. I felt very comfortable and they were constantly making sure that we were doing well. The food on site was always really good and prepared with love. It was such a great experience for me and I am so glad I chose it! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on Instagram: Christinaa.juliaa

Prior to arriving in Rishikesh I was seeking an experience of transformation and in many ways that's exactly what I received whilst attending the Yoga Teacher Trainer certification at the Hariom Yoga Video School.

The programme was recommended to me by a friend solely based on the curriculum as advertised on the website and without any real expectation of what to actually expect I got a very comprehensive baseline exposure to the extremely in-depth topic of Yoga and its ancient roots.

All the teachers were very knowledgeable and all carried a friendly and inviting nature about them. No question was ever stupid and they were all happy to go the extra yard to ensure that myself and my fellow students received an answer to any of our queries.
The location of the school is great, being. a short walk from the Holy River Ganga and other local amenities. The food at the school was also great and varied and the chef very accommodating. Pramod Ji the owner was extremely helpful and an amazing resource in all manner of ways.

In summary, I had a great experience and came away feeling a sense of accomplishment and new found sense of appreciation for the depth and scope of Yoga and the beautiful and ancient life enhancing practice of Yoga in all it's forms. Namaste.

I came to Rishikesh thinking I would be doing yoga with my mom for two weeks but that was only a part of what I did here. Since day one, my mom and I were treated with so much love and respect, we felt like family. It was the quickest I had ever felt welcomed.
As a recent college graduate, I didn’t think I had the energy to sit through any more classes but all the teachers were so personable and passionate that I was always engaged.
They put in so much effort into our fantastic meals, to take us on weekend trips, and to accommodate us in any way necessary.
I never thought I would feel so connected to a place or a group of people as much as I do here. I know that I’ll be coming back for sure, next time with my sister.
